What we do...
The National Black Child Development Institute was established in 1970 and provides support for families of color in a variety of innovative ways with a focus on early education and intervention. We encourage family bonding through parental involvement and education. Because we follow the National agenda, details on these programs are not described on this website, but information can be accessed at www.nbcdi.org
We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all children through leadership and advocacy. We build action networks of concerned invididuals who work in the community to enhance the lives of children and families. We train parents, tutor children, advocate for change and support positive initiatives, collaborate with community leaders and organizations.
Our First Ten Years - A Look Back...
Since our chapter was affiliated in 1997, we have provided free literature, programs and workshops, and opportunities for parents and children to learn and grow. Our lecture series has attracted such notables as Drs. Janice Hale, Dr. Asa Hillard and Jawanza Kunjufu. We also conduct our "Entering The College Zone" project for middle school students and parents. This initivative gives students and parents information and tools on what it will take to go to college. This event is held annually on a local College campus.
What the future holds...
We have adopted an aggressive agenda for our tenth anniversary year. We intend to double our membership, continue our lecture series, improve our website, reach out to the community via newsletters and emails, start a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Parent Empowerment Project (PEP) program, find corporate sponsorship, partner with other providers, build coalitions with the Hudson and NYC Chapters, start a gang prevention/intervention program and more. You can help by becoming a member, or sending a donation to support our efforts.
